"Just eat healthier:" Why "Diet Improvement" as a Chronic Condition Management Strategy Falls Short for Individuals Experiencing Food Insecurity

Common phrases used at doctor's appointments include: "just eat healthier" and "exercise for at least 30 minutes every day." But this advice can be very stressful (and nearly impossible) for food-insecure individuals with one or more chronic condition(s).

Food insecurity - not having access to sufficient food, or food of adequate quality, to meet one's basic needs1- is a real problem in the United States. Food insecurity is strongly associated with chronic diseases, and food-insecure individuals are more likely to face other social determinants that contribute to worsened health outcomes. Doctors suggest diet changes to manage chronic conditions, but this recommendation is really challenging for those who do not have access to healthy foods in the first place. So, unfortunately, the directive: "Just eat healthier" doesn't really work with this population.

So, what can be done?
"Just Eat Healthier" dives into these concepts and offers clear solutions to address food insecurity and chronic condition management at the same time.
